Digital Agriculture: A Life-Size Farm AI Experience

In 2019, we designed and built a comprehensive experiential demonstration at the Microsoft Industry Experience Center in Redmond — a life-size working farm powered by AI and IoT.
The Experience
Collaborating with the Microsoft Research FarmBeats team, we developed a multi-phase narrative across several technology clusters:
- Overall experience storyboard with technology talk tracks guiding visitors through the agricultural AI journey
- Life-size working installations across multiple scenarios — not screen demos, but physical technology you could touch and see operating
- On-farm demonstrations featuring solar power, environmental sensors, and real-time data streaming
- AI-powered camera systems for animal detection and monitoring — trained models recognizing livestock in real time
- Drone technology for aerial farm analysis and crop health assessment
- Edge computing setup simulating a farm house processing data locally before syncing to the cloud
- Custom 3D-printed sheep models with trained AI recognition models — because sometimes you need sheep that hold still
Who Saw It
The Industry Experience Center is where Microsoft brings its most important customers — CEOs, CIOs, CTOs, and business decision-makers from agriculture companies worldwide. This wasn't a trade show booth. It was an immersive destination experience designed to show what the future of farming looks like.
The Bigger Picture
Digital agriculture represents one of the most impactful applications of AI and IoT. The world needs to produce more food with fewer resources, and technology is the lever. Building this experience — making it real, physical, and tangible — was one of the most rewarding projects of my career.
